Insights from these experiments have informed the Wildfire Prepared Home Program – a designation certification program that outlines a system of actions homeowners can take at the parcel-level to address a property’s roof\, building features\, and defensible space to meaningfully reduce its risk to wildfire ignition. \nThis session will walk attendees through the science conducted at IBHS’ Research Center in South Carolina\, along with post-disaster field investigations\, that have collectively identified the most vulnerable areas around the home that must be addressed. IBHS will discuss the two Wildfire Prepared Home designation level requirements and how each addresses ignitions from embers\, radiant heat\, and direct flame contact. IBHS is actively engaged in improving community-scale wildfire resilience through its recently launched Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood standard. This conversation is an opportunity to hear perspectives and experience directly from two prominent Altadena architects–one who lost his home in the fire\, one whose home remains. \nArchitects are passionate about supporting residents of Altadena–where\, in 2023\, home ownership among Black Residents was nearly double the national average–but how should they approach fire-recovery in historically Black neighborhoods? \n“Don’t come with the answer\, lead with the question and then… listen\,” says Steven Lewis\, FAIA\, NOMAC. \nLewis has achieved national prominence by entwining three critical areas of practice. He co-owned the architecture firm\, RAW International and since leaving after 20 years\, he has gone on to hold leadership positions at a number of successful firms; he is a tireless advocate for justice and equity for people and communities of color; and\, his achievements include having served as National President of NOMA\, received the prestigious Whitney M. Young\, Jr. service award from the AIA\, and served Detroit residents as the Urban Design Director within the City’s planning & development department. \nThis conversation sees Lewis return to his own neighborhood\, Altadena\, bringing with him the words spoken in solidarity with community members in Detroit: “Nothing without us\, about us\, is for us” and seeking counsel\, expertise\, and the thoughts of a fellow prominent Altadena architect Charles T. The effects of severe climate events on design professionals\, their clients\, construction companies\, and corporations are drivers of resiliency and risk management strategies to reduce exposure\, protect property\, and income streams of clients. \nIn the final installment of the Resilience and the Evolving Standard of Care series\, an expert panel will begin with a review of projections for future climate conditions\, followed by consideration of how these are shaping the evolving industry standard of care.
