SUMMARY:If Price Is the Problem\, You're Telling the Wrong Story
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this FREE webinar\, brought to you by BQE will close at 12:00 pm PT on Thursday\, April 2\, 2026. \nToo many firms assume they lost the job because their price was too high. In most cases\, however\, the fee is merely a convenient excuse that masks a deeper issue. When a client does not clearly understand the value your firm brings to the table\, price becomes the deciding factor. That is not a pricing problem. It is a positioning problem. \nThis webinar challenges the outdated belief that winning work is about being competitive. You will learn how to earn trust\, create emotional resonance\, and position your firm as the only logical choice long before fees are ever discussed. We will explore how to shape the client’s perception\, elevate your value\, and design a sales process that moves your firm from the pricing conversation to a position of strength. \nThis session is for firm leaders who are ready to stop selling time and start selling expertise. \nSpeaker:\nSteven Burns\, FAIA | Founder | The Well-Designed Firm\nPresented by:

SUMMARY:Candid Conversations about: Women in Design
DESCRIPTION:According to the 2020 Census\, 50.9% of the U.S. population was female\, while the remaining 49.1% was male. This means that the female population made up 168.8 million people\, while the male population made up 162.7 million. The 2020 Census also showed that the U.S. population reached 331\,449\,281 people. \nThe Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in 2019\, 25% of the 208\,000 people working as “Architects\, except naval” in the United States were women. Importantly\, the BLS does not distinguish between licensed and non-licensed practitioners (“apprentices and trainees”). By comparison\, NCARB reports that there were 113\,554 registered architects in the United States in 2017\, so the BLS figure of 208\,000 counts many aspiring architects who are pursuing licensure\, as well as those who are not working towards a license. \nJoin us for a conversation exploring the experiences\, challenges\, and perspectives of women in architecture.

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2026: Where Are We\, Where Do We Need to Go
DESCRIPTION:For hundreds of years\, architects who are Black or African American have faced persistent barriers: to entry into the profession\, to advancement within firms\, and to access to clients and leadership opportunities. Over time\, AIA\, often in partnership with NOMA\, has launched multiple waves of initiatives aimed at expanding career pathways\, increasing recognition\, and reducing structural barriers. Most recently\, this work has included the development of new strategies\, tools\, and programs beginning in 2016. \nSo where are we now\, at this critical moment in history? Where are you? \nThis Architecture\, Belonging\, and Connection (ABC) discussion is intended to be an open\, honest\, and candid conversation among members of the profession. This is a space to share experiences\, observations\, questions\, and reflections—without judgment and without recording—so that voices can be heard authentically. \nWe look forward to learning from one another and holding space for dialogue that reflects both where we’ve been and where we still need to go. \nCo-moderators:\nJulia Weatherspoon\, AIA\, NOMA – Gensler\, California Architectural Foundation \nCraig Atkinson\, AIA\, NOMA – Director of Higher Education\, Carrier Johnson + Culture \nClick the photos to read the bios. \n \n \n \n Craig Atkinson\, AIA\, NOMA\, DBIA\, LEED AP \n  \n \nCraig Atkinson\, AIA\, NOMA\, DBIA\, LEED APManaging Director LA Office | Director of Higher EducationCarrier Johnson + Culture \nCraig Atkinson is the Managing Director of the Los Angeles Office and Director of Higher Education at Carrier Johnson + Culture\, where he leads the development of growth in the higher education sector in  Southern California and Seattle. With 35+ years of experience delivering complex public-sector and institutional projects\, Craig brings a deep understanding of how architecture intersects with policy\, organizational culture\, and access. \nCraig currently serves as West Region Vice President of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). In this role\, he partners with ten chapters across the West Region to support leadership development\, chapter sustainability\, and regional growth consistent with NOMA’s mission to champion diversity and inclusion in the architecture profession\, its vision of a profession that fully reflects the communities it serves\, and its values of equity\, advocacy\, leadership\, and collective responsibility. His work focuses on strengthening inter-chapter collaboration\, advancing advocacy\, and expanding pathways into the profession for underrepresented communities. \nPreviously\, Craig served as President of SoCal NOMA\, where he helped expand the chapter’s geographic reach\, elevate its advocacy voice\, and establish long-range strategic planning efforts. Earlier in his career\, he held senior leadership roles at BFGC and IBI Group (now Arcadis)\, where he led the California Public Practice and served as an executive sponsor for firmwide Justice\, Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion initiatives. \nCraig is known for convening thoughtful\, candid conversations grounded in lived experience\, professional accountability\, and mutual respect. He approaches dialogue not as debate\, but as shared inquiry—centered on listening\, reflection\, and collective responsibility at a critical moment for the profession. \nCraig Atkinson\, AIA\, NOMA\, DBIA\, LEED AP \n \n \n \n Julia Weatherspoon\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP \n  \n \nJulia Weatherspoon\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED APAssociate\, Gensler; Regent\, California Architectural Foundation \nJulia Weatherspoon is a licensed architect and associate at Gensler San Francisco dedicated to crafting spaces that not only creatively address design challenges\, but also inspire\, resonate\, and build connections among people. \nShe brings experience across a range of architecture projects at multiple scales\, project deliveries\, and building typologies from workplace\, aviation\, civic design\, and most recently academic higher education projects that focus on elevating experience through living and learning communities. SUMMARY:Your Next Hire Might Not Be Human: How AI and Outsourcing Are Rewriting the Rules
DESCRIPTION:In an era where AI can draft proposals\, automate invoicing\, and even generate design options\, the question facing firm leaders isn’t who to hire; it’s whether to hire at all. Traditional staffing models are being challenged by automation\, global talent marketplaces\, and an urgent need for agility. At the same time\, the human dimension of business\, culture\, creativity\, and trust is more important than ever. \nThis webinar will challenge long-held assumptions about what a team should look like. We’ll explore when it makes sense to invest in a full-time hire\, when outsourcing or automation delivers better ROI\, and how to build a firm that clients trust\, even when your “team” looks very different from what they expect. \nWhether you’re a solo practitioner\, scaling your staff\, or leading a larger practice\, this session will help you rethink growth with clarity and confidence. \nRegistration for this FREE webinar\, brought to you by BQE will close at 12:00 pm PT on Thursday\, January 22\, 2026. \nSpeaker:\nSteven Burns\, FAIA | Founder | The Well-Designed Firm\n

Changing use patterns and dynamic outdoor conditions mean that static controls aren’t adequate to maintain healthy and comfortable indoor environments while also saving energy. Digital Twins can optimize performance based on multiple sensors and data sources derived from multiple sensors and provide fault detection if any of the sensors fail or fall out of calibration. \nA Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a real-world entity or process. It uses historic data and real-time observations to optimize system performance\, support proactive maintenance\, systems and information decisions. Digital Twinning involves a two-way digital communication channel that provides regular updates and intelligence to the virtual representation\, which then processes and interprets the data and presents it in actionable form to users\, thereby guiding optimization of the real-world entity. \nIn this webinar\, attendees will take a deep dive into Digital Twins and how they are being employed to promote design excellence and resilience. \nModerator:\nAlan Scott\, FAIA\, LEED Fellow\, LEED AP BD+C\, O+M\, CEM\, WELL AP | Director of Sustainability\, Intertek \nSpeakers:\nAmy Polvado | Chairwoman\, Founder and CEO\, Facilimax \nChikara Inamura | Director of Digital Technology\, CO Architects \nDr. David Jason Gerber | Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Practice and of Architecture\, University of Southern California

SUMMARY:Fire Response Session 5 | Wildfire Prepared Home Program: Improving Property Survivability and Insurability
DESCRIPTION:This session qualifies for 1.5 LU/HSW (live webinar attendees only). \nFREE registration for this webinar will close at 12pm PT on Wednesday\, May 28\, 2025. \nThe AIA in CALIFORNIA is responding to the recent southern California fires with a unified plan for response\, recovery and rebuilding for communities that were devastated by the disaster. This series of sessions will help the architectural profession understand the rapidly changing landscape\, the local issues facing communities\, and strategies for resilient design and disaster response; the AIA in California is connecting policy makers\, government officials\, and practitioners uniting architects in building a more just\, equitable\, and resilient future. \nIBHS is a non-profit research organization has spent years researching material and component vulnerabilities\, wind-driven ember ignitions\, and wind-driven building-to-building fire spread. Insights from these experiments have informed the Wildfire Prepared Home Program – a designation certification program that outlines a system of actions homeowners can take at the parcel-level to address a property’s roof\, building features\, and defensible space to meaningfully reduce its risk to wildfire ignition. \nThis session will walk attendees through the science conducted at IBHS’ Research Center in South Carolina\, along with post-disaster field investigations\, that have collectively identified the most vulnerable areas around the home that must be addressed. IBHS will discuss the two Wildfire Prepared Home designation level requirements and how each addresses ignitions from embers\, radiant heat\, and direct flame contact. IBHS is actively engaged in improving community-scale wildfire resilience through its recently launched Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood standard. This neighborhood-level operational framework includes the science-backed requirements of its Home-level program and incorporates additional requirements to address structure density\, the presence of connective fuels\, and building materials – the three pillars of wildfire conflagration. \nSpeakers:\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Anne Cope | Chief Engineer\, IBHS\n\nRoy Wright | President and CEO\, IBHS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick to view the Full Presentation

SUMMARY:Act Now - Permit Streamlining: Resources and Strategy to Advocate for Local Reform
DESCRIPTION:This is an AIA members only session.\nQualifies for 1.5 LU  (currently pending approval; live webinar attendees only). \nRegistration for this webinar will close at 10am PT on Wednesday\, April 30\, 2025. Zoom registration links will be sent no later than 10:30am the day of the webinar.  \nWith project delivery increasing in complexity\, everyone in the design and construction industry is seeking greater efficiency and predictability. This need for streamlining has increasingly focused on the permitting process\, where unnecessary and unexpected delays can have a huge impact on costs\, timeline\, and project outcomes. \nWhile there are many opportunities for improvement and examples of effective streamlining\, the nuances of circumstances such as jurisdiction\, project type\, project constraints and the many other variables can make progress in permit streamlining daunting. Where there is agreement is that current systemic conditions must improve. \nChanges in the permitting process require focus\, persistence\, and a collaborative approach\, and it’s usually very helpful to know that those changes do not have to start from scratch. With basic principles and steps forward clearly outlined and supported by case studies and illustrative examples of successful initiatives from throughout the country\, this session will give you and your local AIA component a potential roadmap to navigate change in your community. It will also help debunk myths about permit streamlining that often create barriers to getting started\, as well as offer resources that can help in assembling an effective team to plan and advocate for meaningful progress. \nSpeakers: \nMichael Malinowski\, FAIA | Code and Regulatory Consultant with AIA CA\, President: Applied Architecture Inc and Streamline Institute Inc \n\nVideo access available to AIA members only.

SUMMARY:Fire Response Session 4 | “Nothing About Us\, Without Us\, Is for Us” - Altadena\, from the Ground Up.
DESCRIPTION:Scroll down to view the video. \nThis session qualifies for 1 LU/HSW (live webinar attendees only) \nFREE registration for this webinar will close at 12pm PT on Wednesday\, April 23\, 2025. \nR. Steven Lewis\, FAIA\, NOMAC in conversation with Charles T. Bryant\, AIA\, NOMA\, a Past President of AIA Pasadena & Foothill.\n \nSince the first days of the disastrous fires\, Southern Californians have advocated that recovery and rebuild efforts respect the historically Black neighborhood of Altadena. This conversation is an opportunity to hear perspectives and experience directly from two prominent Altadena architects–one who lost his home in the fire\, one whose home remains. \nArchitects are passionate about supporting residents of Altadena–where\, in 2023\, home ownership among Black Residents was nearly double the national average–but how should they approach fire-recovery in historically Black neighborhoods? \n“Don’t come with the answer\, lead with the question and then… listen\,” says Steven Lewis\, FAIA\, NOMAC. \nLewis has achieved national prominence by entwining three critical areas of practice. He co-owned the architecture firm\, RAW International and since leaving after 20 years\, he has gone on to hold leadership positions at a number of successful firms; he is a tireless advocate for justice and equity for people and communities of color; and\, his achievements include having served as National President of NOMA\, received the prestigious Whitney M. Young\, Jr. service award from the AIA\, and served Detroit residents as the Urban Design Director within the City’s planning & development department. \nThis conversation sees Lewis return to his own neighborhood\, Altadena\, bringing with him the words spoken in solidarity with community members in Detroit: “Nothing without us\, about us\, is for us” and seeking counsel\, expertise\, and the thoughts of a fellow prominent Altadena architect Charles T. Bryant\, AIA\, NOMA. \nA former President of AIA Pasadena & Foothill\, Bryant co-owns Masbuild Design Solutions\, Inc.\, an award winning architecture\, interiors and planning firm\, established in 1996. His more than forty years of experience in the design and construction industry includes Principal Architect for institutional\, multi-family residential and commercial projects for the HUD\, the Navy and the Air Force; internationally for the US State Department; and for school districts throughout the nation. Prior to co-founding Masbuild Design Solutions\, he led the award-winning firm Charles T. Bryant & Associates. Mr. Bryant has long provided services to underserved and marginalized communities\, including communities of color\, senior citizens\, veterans\, and those facing housing insecurity. \nSteven Lewis\, FAIA\, NOMAC\nCharles T.
