SUMMARY:Strategizing for Success: How to Design and Procure Low Carbon Concrete
DESCRIPTION:The building industry is under constant pressure to provide low-carbon solutions. Traditional green building standards such as LEED started the movement\, but more recent public policies have elevated the drive to low carbon building materials. Tackling the problem of embodied carbon\, the emissions associated with building materials and construction\, is crucial to meeting near term climate goals. This session will examine how early collaborative decision-making and the use of performance-based specifications can empower project teams to include embodied carbon targets alongside cost\, performance\, and schedule to create a holistic bidding and procurement process that supports sustainability goals. This session will also examine concrete specifications and how to influence them to allow for greater reduction in carbon footprint. Participants will be introduced to NRMCA”™s newly developed Concrete Carbon Calculator that helps set carbon budgets to include in specifications. \nWhy it’s important: \nSustainable and resilient concrete designs leverage optimized elements that work towards open\, well-lit spaces that improve the physical\, emotional and social well-being of occupants (Health). Such practices also encourage the use of higher quality materials\, with improvements to durability and resiliency (Safety). Lastly\, sustainable concrete is achievable with negligible impact to cost while benefiting the environment (Welfare). \nPanel: \nLuke Lombardi\, PE | Sustainability | Buro Happold \nDave Walsh\, AIA\, LEED AP BD+C | Owner | Dave Walsh Consulting LLC \nBrandon Wray | Director\, Building Innovations\, Structures & Sustainability Group | National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) \n  \n\n Luke Lombardi\, PE | Sustainability | Buro Happold \n\n Dave Walsh\, AIA\, LEED AP BD+C | Owner | Dave Walsh Consulting LLC\n\n Brandon Wray | Director\, Building Innovations\, Structures & Sustainability Group | National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA)\n \n \n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives Slidedeck_Strategizing for Success Low Carbon Concrete

SUMMARY:Project Delivery: Modular Construction and ARC Start-up Firms
DESCRIPTION:Prefabrication\, modularization\, offsite and industrialized construction are increasingly being used as strategies to address mounting supply chain challenges\, labor shortages\, and escalating costs. The market for factory-based construction continues to raise in the U.S.\, especially in muti-family housing\, as developers seek alternatives to conventual delivery models. The approaches are also evolving. This type of construction changes the planning and procurement processes\, and therefore the scope of various projects team members. This webinar examines how the role of the architect is changing to meet the demand of offsite construction workflows. \nPresented by architecture academics and consultants at MOD X\, who are experts in offsite and modular construction\, the session will begin with a discussion of market drivers and an overview of modular systems. It will then shift to four personas or archetypes representing the roles architects are playing in this changing construction landscape. The personas will be illustrated with case studies of contemporary practicing design professionals in the U.S. who are leading the practice of offsite construction and leveraging its value in unique ways. Their stories characterize the offsite design sector and the role of design teams in the future of modular construction. \n\n \n\n \n \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives Slidedeck_Project Delivery

SUMMARY:The 60-Minute MBA for Architects
DESCRIPTION:Now on Video!Scroll down to access this session.Speaker: \nSteve Burns\, FAIA | Founder | The Well-Designed Firm  \nDescription: \nBeing a brilliant architect rarely translates into having a successful business. With all the years of education and training to make us experts in our profession\, the skills needed to have a successful business were conveniently overlooked. This webinar will fill the void and provide you with the business management highlights that every firm needs to apply to achieve their full potential. \nIn this session\, we will learn the fundamentals of all successful AE firms and provide the basis for making well-grounded business decisions. We will learn how firms can transition from being professionals providing services\, to highly tuned businesses that can identify the needs of the marketplace and create services and products that are appropriately priced and yield consistent and greater profits. \nRather than seeking out new projects that merely build upon your current skills\, you will start from a business-thinking mindset\, where processes that are critical to building a thriving firm are examined and constituted in your firm. We will explore the importance of data within an architect firm and demonstrate how careful collection and interpretation can lead your firm into more exciting and profitable territory. \nJoin us for an engaging\, live webinar presented by Steven Burns\, FAIA\, as he shares lessons learned over 35 years working with over 1\,300 architecture firms.   \nhttps://youtu.be/RBlDt8Ns67I\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives Slidedeck_60min MBA for Architects

SUMMARY:Practice With Purpose
DESCRIPTION:William Leddy\, FAIA | Principal | LMS Architects \nRyan Jang\, AIA | Principal | LMS Architects \nHow can we redesign the practice of architecture to focus the transformative power of design on some of society”™s most urgent issues? \nToday\, our communities face overwhelming challenges\, including the accelerating climate emergency\, persistent social injustice\, chronic homelessness\, and the need for innovative educational environments that prepare young people for a resilient future. These are not discrete phenomena. They are inextricably linked in a combined ecological and societal emergency that cries out for creative\, integrated solutions. Architects are uniquely positioned to respond to this profound emergency. But to succeed\, the design values and practice of our profession must be rapidly transformed within the next decade. Architects must become creative agents of change\, providing the vision and expertise to lead our communities toward an equitable\, resilient\, zero carbon future for all. Business as usual is no longer viable. We must practice with purpose. \nThis session will offer practical strategies in the daily practice of architecture. What can one person do to address the great challenges of our time? Take collective action through design every day.  \nhttps://youtu.be/vuOHscTc3SM \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nFull Presentation_Practice with Purpose
