SUMMARY:ARE/CSE Statewide Study Hub: PPD & PDD
DESCRIPTION:Please note this session is on a Tuesday instead of a Monday due to Labor Day. \nStudy Hub is AIA California”™s pathway for emerging professionals to study and pursue licensure. These statewide ARE study sessions and virtual study groups serve as a hub for education\, connection\, and community. This portal does not replace other study materials or resources\, rather it supplements them\, serving as a network and allowing for collaboration between EPs and AIA professionals across California. \nThis year\, we’re streamlining your study experience by grouping commonly paired exams together. \nProject Planning & Design (PPD) focuses on the preliminary design of sites and buildings. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of and abilities in design concepts\, sustainability/environmental design\, universal design\, and other forms of governing codes and regulations. \nProject Development & Documentation (PDD) focuses on the integration and documentation of building systems\, material selection\, and material assemblies into a project. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of and abilities in integration of civil\, structural\, mechanical\, electrical\, plumbing\, and specialty systems into overall project design and documentation. \nHost: Elif Bayram\, AIA – Founder of AREQuestions \nInterested in joining our hub where you can ask questions\, connect with other members and access resources? Click here \nPlease make sure you registered for the correct session by using the dropdown in the zoom registration page to select the date you wish to register for. By default it will show the immediate upcoming session first.Â

SUMMARY:ZNCD Webinar - Salvaged Lumber Reuse in Federal Center South
DESCRIPTION:This session qualifies for 1 LU/HSW (live webinar attendees only) and 1hr of ZNCD MCE. \nRegistration for this webinar will close at 10am PT on Wednesday\, September 3\, 2025. Registrants will receive their Zoom link no later than 10:30am PT the day of.  \nAll things must come to an end – including buildings. But does everything at the end of a building’s life need to end? New construction and renovation projects continue to deplete vast quantities of resources\, many of which go to waste. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can build efficiently with sustainable products\, but reusing building materials salvaged from old structures is yet another way to decarbonize. \nEncouraging materials reuse reduce the amount of embodied carbon in our buildings and can help reduce waste from deconstruction. In this webinar\, we will explore a case study on salvaged lumber. Federal Center South in Seattle\, Washington includes reclaimed timber from a warehouse that previously occupied the site. Join us as we dive into the reuse strategies and sustainable design approaches seen in the project. \nModerator:\nAvideh Haghighi\, AIA | Deep Green Architect & Advocate\, Founder @ ZEROHOUZ \nSpeaker:\nAmie Sullivan\, PE\, SE | Managing Principal\, kpff

SUMMARY:ZNCD Webinar | The MEP 2040 Challenge and MEP Embodied Carbon 101 for Architects
DESCRIPTION:This session qualifies for 1 LU/HSW (live webinar attendees only) and 1hr of ZNCD MCE. \nRegistration for this webinar will close at 10am PT on Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025. Registrants will receive their Zoom link no later than 10:30am PT the day of.  \nIssued by the Carbon Leadership Forum in 2021\, the Mechanical\, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) 2040 Challenge requires a set of commitments aimed at achieving total carbon emissions associated with building systems. This includes MEP embodied carbon. Architects can employ thoughtful and innovative design to reduce carbon in buildings\, but impacts of the systems installed add layers of embodied carbon left to be addressed. \nIn this webinar\, architects and design professionals will learn more about the MEP 2040 Challenge and its mission to rapidly reduce whole building carbon and MEP embodied carbon by 2040. We will review the Beginner’s Guide to MEP Embodied Carbon and dive into pilot projects of various building types\, climate zones\, HVAC system typologies\, and impacts of refrigerant emissions to demonstrate how architects can address these facets in their projects to reduce embodied carbon. \nSpeakers:\nHafsa Burt\, AIA\, LEED Fellow | Principal\, hb+a Architects \nBrian Johnson | Senior Project Engineer\, hok \nRachel Wrublik | Associate\, PAE \nRob Bolin\, PE\, LEED Fellow | Principal\, CMTA

SUMMARY:Digital Twins: Integrating Resilience in Architectural Projects
DESCRIPTION:This session qualifies for 1.5 LU/HSW (live webinar attendees only\, pending AIA approval). \nRegistration for this webinar will close at 10am PT on Tuesday\, September 30\, 2025. Registrants will receive their Zoom link no later than 10:30am PT the day of.  \nBuilding occupants have higher expectations for the indoor environments they occupy. Changing use patterns and dynamic outdoor conditions mean that static controls aren’t adequate to maintain healthy and comfortable indoor environments while also saving energy. Digital Twins can optimize performance based on multiple sensors and data sources derived from multiple sensors and provide fault detection if any of the sensors fail or fall out of calibration. \nA Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a real-world entity or process. It uses historic data and real-time observations to optimize system performance\, support proactive maintenance\, systems and information decisions. Digital Twinning involves a two-way digital communication channel that provides regular updates and intelligence to the virtual representation\, which then processes and interprets the data and presents it in actionable form to users\, thereby guiding optimization of the real-world entity. \nIn this webinar\, attendees will take a deep dive into Digital Twins and how they are being employed to promote design excellence and resilience. \nModerator:\nAlan Scott\, FAIA\, LEED Fellow\, LEED AP BD+C\, O+M\, CEM\, WELL AP | Director of Sustainability\, Intertek \nSpeakers:\nAmy Polvado | Chairwoman\, Founder and CEO\, Facilimax \nChikara Inamura | Director of Digital Technology\, CO Architects \nDr. David Jason Gerber | Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Practice and of Architecture\, University of Southern California
