SUMMARY:Credit Cram | Towards a New Climate Urbanism: Wildfires\, Microgrids and Holistic Communities
DESCRIPTION:This seminar examines social agents\, cultural practices\, greenhouse gas impacts\, building resiliency\, operational carbon\, and intuitional frameworks around designing with the dynamic fire ecologies of Southern California and in response to the urgency of adaptation to increasingly large\, frequent\, and unprecedented wildfire events. With a primary focus on the Los Angeles city and wilderness interface\, this seminar will review history\, policies\, growth at the exurban periphery\, and wildfire risks of this area. Finally\, this program will touch on methods of resilient design and their benefits\, inventive infrastructure\, landscape management and carbon reduction opportunities that can impact this region and others like it. \nModerator:\nIsmar Enriquez\, AIA\, LFA\, LEED AP | Director of Sustainable Housing Design\, Steinberg Hart\n  \nSpeakers:\n Casey Castor\, Assoc. SUMMARY:NBI | Understanding and Reducing Energy Use and Carbon Emissions in Museums
DESCRIPTION:Museums and other cultural institutions have unique building use patterns and characteristics\, which can present energy challenges not often encountered in other public buildings. Limited research on the sector”™s energy use patterns and greenhouse gas emissions makes energy benchmarking difficult. The presenters in this session will describe recent research on this building type and discuss how it is shaping current practices addressing Climate Action in the cultural sector. The session will feature Case Studies on the efforts of cultural institutions that have committed to reducing their carbon emissions.\nQualifies for 1.5 hrs Zero Net Carbon Design Mandatory Continuing Education. SUMMARY:Standard of Care: A Decade of Passive House Projects in California
DESCRIPTION:The practice of ‘Passive House BB’ has been designing\, building\, and monitoring Passive House projects across California for more than a decade.\nThis presentation will provide a high-level review of that journey. It will touch on Passive House basics\, then look at how this standard has been integrated into the processes and practices of this firm. A selection of single- and multi- family projects located across California will be used to illustrate specific targets\, metrics and details\, including early forays into embodied carbon analysis.\nWe’ll close with a brief discussion of ‘Standard of Care’\, with a proposal for how architects can choose their own ‘standard of care’ to include outcomes well beyond the currently narrow legal definition of this term.\nSpeaker: Bronwyn Barry\, CPHD\, RA | Principal | Passive House BB\nBronwyn Barry\, CPHD\, RA\nModerator: Jennifer Kretschmer\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED Green Associate | Principal | J. SUMMARY:Reuse and Transform
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore how reusing and upgrading existing buildings can benefit the climate and community. Siegel and Strain Architects will present three recent and current reuse projects and discuss process\, opportunities\, and benefits as well as challenges and lessons learned. \nThe carbon impacts will be evaluated using the recently launched CARE Tool. \nWhy this is important? \nPresenting case studies on adaptive reuse projects and how carbon impacts are evaluated are incredibly important to show architects and design professionals that reusing existing buildings is possible\, and can be used as a decarbonization method. \nModerator: \nLarry Strain\, FAIA\, LEED AP | Principal\, SIEGEL & STRAIN Architects   \nSpeakers: \nSusi Marzuola\, AIA\, LEED BD+C | Principal\, SIEGEL & STRAIN Architects \nAllison Hyatt\, RA | Project Architect\, SIEGEL & STRAIN Architects \nLaura Levenberg\, AIA LEED BD+C | Project Architect\, SIEGEL & STRAIN Architects \nhttps://youtu.be/CSufTAWXFZM?si=QNXBFbvsloZrzVjw\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nFull Presentation_Reuse and Transform

SUMMARY:Using Microgrids for Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Moderator:\nDavid Kaneda\, FAIA\, PE\, LEED Fellow | Principal and Thought Leader\, IDeAs Consulting\, Inc.\nSpeakers:\nAlex Kaffka | CEO & Senior Principal\, Verdera\nSean Armstrong | Managing Principal\, Redwood Energy\nFalling costs have increased interest in photovoltaic electric systems\, batteries\, battery recycling\, and microgrids that can operate independently of the utility grid. In this program we will illustrate how microgrids provide resilience against natural disasters and grid outages. Microgrids can also reduce carbon emissions while having a positive economic impact on an individual property or community.\nThe potential for natural disasters to threaten large areas of California is significant. This webinar will provide examples of resilient microgrid\, including an approximately one MW microgrid designed for riding through Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events\, a microgrid for a community disaster recovery center\, and microgrid systems with smart controls that provide resilience and eliminate the need for electrical service upgrades for electrification of existing single-family homes.\nQualifies for 1.5hrs of ZNCD MCE \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives + Redwood Energy_Microgrids
