SUMMARY:Project Delivery: Modular Construction and ARC Start-up Firms
DESCRIPTION:Prefabrication\, modularization\, offsite and industrialized construction are increasingly being used as strategies to address mounting supply chain challenges\, labor shortages\, and escalating costs. The market for factory-based construction continues to raise in the U.S.\, especially in muti-family housing\, as developers seek alternatives to conventual delivery models. The approaches are also evolving. This type of construction changes the planning and procurement processes\, and therefore the scope of various projects team members. This webinar examines how the role of the architect is changing to meet the demand of offsite construction workflows. \nPresented by architecture academics and consultants at MOD X\, who are experts in offsite and modular construction\, the session will begin with a discussion of market drivers and an overview of modular systems. It will then shift to four personas or archetypes representing the roles architects are playing in this changing construction landscape. The personas will be illustrated with case studies of contemporary practicing design professionals in the U.S. who are leading the practice of offsite construction and leveraging its value in unique ways. Their stories characterize the offsite design sector and the role of design teams in the future of modular construction. \n\n \n\n \n \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives Slidedeck_Project Delivery

SUMMARY:Practice With Purpose
DESCRIPTION:William Leddy\, FAIA | Principal | LMS Architects \nRyan Jang\, AIA | Principal | LMS Architects \nHow can we redesign the practice of architecture to focus the transformative power of design on some of society”™s most urgent issues? \nToday\, our communities face overwhelming challenges\, including the accelerating climate emergency\, persistent social injustice\, chronic homelessness\, and the need for innovative educational environments that prepare young people for a resilient future. These are not discrete phenomena. They are inextricably linked in a combined ecological and societal emergency that cries out for creative\, integrated solutions. Architects are uniquely positioned to respond to this profound emergency. But to succeed\, the design values and practice of our profession must be rapidly transformed within the next decade. Architects must become creative agents of change\, providing the vision and expertise to lead our communities toward an equitable\, resilient\, zero carbon future for all. Business as usual is no longer viable. We must practice with purpose. \nThis session will offer practical strategies in the daily practice of architecture. What can one person do to address the great challenges of our time? SUMMARY:Equity in Design: Architecture and Spatial Justice
DESCRIPTION:The creation of space is fundamental to the practice of architecture. Space is physical yet it is a social construct. As Edward Soja writes\, “space is socially produced and can therefore be socially changed”. In this webinar we will explore the concept of Spatial Justice – What does it mean? The spaces we inhabit can have negative as well as positive consequences on practically everything we do. Confronting social and economic inequality in our cities is a role for architects and architecture. Through new structures\, strategies and expanded models of practice architects can be an essential part of that process. \nEarn 1 LU for attending live. \nSpeaker: Paul D. SUMMARY:Multifamily Envelope Requirements Under the 2022 Energy Code
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Energy Code\, going into effect January 1\, 2023\, has new chapters devoted to multifamily occupancies. These chapters include new envelope requirements supporting multifamily buildings (along with other increased efficiency measures not discussed during this session). \nTopics we will explore include: the new requirements for opaque surfaces (walls\, roofs and ceiling)\, the new fire rating considerations\, and how Quality Insulation Installation (QII) applies to new multifamily buildings; increased fenestration efficiency including a new AW (Architectural Window) performance class and new area allowances; and the new air barrier design considerations and testing requirements and compliance options for new multifamily buildings and how they will impact the design professional”™s scope of work. We also will examine the performance method changes and how it might\, or might not\, allow the flexibility allowed in the past code cycles due to the major revisions by the Energy Commission in support the new multifamily requirements. In addition\, we will share how Energy Code Ace supports the design professional via their suite of classes\, resources and tools get up to speed on these new requirements. \nSpeaker: Gina Rodda | Principal/Owner of Gabel Associates\, LLC \n \n(Watching video recordings of past webinars does not give the opportunity to receive any AIA LUs / CE credit.)\n\nAdditional Resources\nAdditional Resources \nAIA CA 2022 Multifamily Handout

SUMMARY:Single Family Electrification Considerations and Requirements under the 2022 Energy Code
DESCRIPTION:With the 2022 Energy Code going into effect January 1\, 2023\, California is moving closer to meeting goals for carbon reduction\, grid harmonization and energy efficiency. Electrification\, photovoltaics\, and ever-increasing building efficiency measures are all tools utilized to help single-family construction achieve these goals. \nDuring this session\, we will review the electrification measures of the Energy Code and explore appliance choices\, such as space heating\, water heating\, cooktops and clothes dryers\, that can meet those measures taking into consideration installation criteria\, cost\, and fuel source; explore when the photovoltaics (PV) minimum requirements apply and how PV sizing should take into consideration these additional electric appliances and other electric loads of the home; discuss how battery storage allows the homeowner to store electric production from the PV system to utilize during peak use conditions and the Energy Code requirements when battery storage is not installed at time of construction. There is a lot of great information out there supporting electrification\, and we take a look at some of Energy Code Ace”™s favorites. \nSpeaker: Gina Rodda | Principal/Owner of Gabel Associates\, LLC \n \n \n(Watching video recordings of past webinars does not give the opportunity to receive any AIA LUs / CE credit.)

SUMMARY:In Practice: Life Cycle Assessment of Concrete Buildings
DESCRIPTION:When looking at the environmental impact of a building\, it is important to assess every stage of the environmental life cycle\, from material extraction and product manufacturing to building operations and maintenance through to end-of-life. Concrete offers many environmental attributes that help reduce the overall environmental life cycle impacts of a building. This presentation explores how life cycle assessment can be used to measure and lower the environmental impacts of buildings. \nThe in-practice portion of this webinar will include case studies presented by leading industry sustainability advocates from Gensler and Magnusson Klemencic Associates and how they”™ve incorporated LCA into their projects.

SUMMARY:AIA”™s Economic Outlook: 6 Things You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Architecture can”™t escape the current reality of volatile economic conditions\, but watching AIA”™s Managing Director of Research and Practice\, Michele Russo”™s economic forecast helps break down the the complex issues into practical reality and provided specific information for California markets. AIA CA hosted this Outlook on May 19 ”“ and compiled this list of key takeaways from a diverse cross section of attendees. \n6 Things You Need to Know:\n\nThere”™s a brewing talent shortage that”™ll require rethinking retention and recruitment practices\, and the workplace\nMaterials pricing\, supply chain delays\, and labor availability are major problems that influence project costs – a real and present danger for project sponsors”™ ambitions\nPandemic and post-pandemic stresses are creating better relationships within the AEC team; cooperation is emerging – and very desirable\nSensible Immigration policy could shore up construction trades dwindling labor pool\nPortions of the residential and non-residential market sectors are continuing to remain in high demand\nThe Architectural Billings Index is a unique predictor of where the market is going in the future. Currently\, over half of billings are related to rehabilitation\, renovation\, and historic preservation and promises a robust market opportunity over the next few years\n\nWhether you”™re running a firm or working in a firm\, this information is important to everyone and well worth your time. \n\nEarn 1 LU for attending live.\n\nhttps://youtu.be/dm-j9q5oBuQ
