SUMMARY:Path to Zero Carbon
DESCRIPTION:This session qualifies for 1.5 LU/HSW and 1.5 hr Zero Net Carbon Design Mandatory Continuing Education (live webinar attendees only). \nThe Path To Zero Carbon Series explores research and solutions for one of the most significant challenges of the 21st century. Addressing the climate crisis requires the building industry to reach carbon neutral design and construction across all projects. Our industry is responsible for nearly half of global warming\, so our actions to reduce these emissions have a massive impact. \nGlobal warming is caused primarily by CO2e\, but what do we need to know to have useful conversations on CO2e instead of just talking energy efficiency? What resources\, policies\, and frameworks are out there on embodied carbon operational carbon? This webinar will address these questions and more to understand the path forward to zero carbon. \nModerator: Laura Dulski\, AIA | Principal\, DLR Group \nSpeaker: Kjell Anderson\, FAIA\, CSBA\, LEED Fellow\, FitWel | Principal\, Director of Sustainable Design\, LMN Architects \nLaura Dulski\, AIA | Principal\, DLR Group\nKjell Anderson\, FAIA\, CSBA\, LEED Fellow\, FitWel | Principal\, Director of Sustainable Design\, LMN Architects\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Credit Cram | AIA 2030 Commitment: How Medium and Small Firms Report and Track Project Data & What Comes Next
DESCRIPTION:Some architects are under the impression that the 2030 Commitment is only for large firms and that reporting is too difficult for small to medium-sized firms. To dispel that myth\, this program will focus on two modest-sized firms that participate in the 2030 Commitment. Browning-Day is a medium-sized\, regional firm in Indianapolis\, Indiana. Feldman Architecture is a small firm in San Francisco and one of the 19 firms that achieved a portfolio-wide reduction of 80% in 2022. \nJoin Daniel Overbey\, AIA\, Director of Sustainability at Browning Day and Ben Welty\, Sustainability Manager at Feldman Architecture\, as they discuss the AIA 2030 Commitment”™s Design Data Exchange (DDx) and outline each firm’s lessons learned and best practices for setting project performance targets and subsequent portfolio-wide reporting for the DDx. \nModerator:\nKeith Hempel\, FAIA | Principal\, Chief Design Officer\, LPA Design Studios\nSpeakers:\n Ben Welty\, AIA | Senior Associate\, Architect\, Sustainability Manager\, Feldman ArchitectureDaniel Overbey\, AIA LEED Fellow\, WELL AP | Director of Sustainability and Associate Principal at Browning Day; Assistant Professor at Ball State University\nWhy it’s important:\nThe AIA 2030 Commitment is a commitment for firms to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. These reductions help better our environment and the planet\, and also help change firm and practice culture to be aware of their impact on the environment and people who live in it. Encouraging small and medium sized firms to sign the commitment can lead to cultural changes and promote the health\, safety and welfare of the environment and the public due to carbon reductions through higher performing buildings. \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives + Browning Day Presentation_Medium and Small Firm 2030 Commitment

SUMMARY:Standard of Care: A Decade of Passive House Projects in California
DESCRIPTION:The practice of ‘Passive House BB’ has been designing\, building\, and monitoring Passive House projects across California for more than a decade.\nThis presentation will provide a high-level review of that journey. It will touch on Passive House basics\, then look at how this standard has been integrated into the processes and practices of this firm. A selection of single- and multi- family projects located across California will be used to illustrate specific targets\, metrics and details\, including early forays into embodied carbon analysis.\nWe’ll close with a brief discussion of ‘Standard of Care’\, with a proposal for how architects can choose their own ‘standard of care’ to include outcomes well beyond the currently narrow legal definition of this term.\nSpeaker: Bronwyn Barry\, CPHD\, RA | Principal | Passive House BB\nBronwyn Barry\, CPHD\, RA\nModerator: Jennifer Kretschmer\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED Green Associate | Principal | J. SUMMARY:Using Microgrids for Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Moderator:\nDavid Kaneda\, FAIA\, PE\, LEED Fellow | Principal and Thought Leader\, IDeAs Consulting\, Inc.\nSpeakers:\nAlex Kaffka | CEO & Senior Principal\, Verdera\nSean Armstrong | Managing Principal\, Redwood Energy\nFalling costs have increased interest in photovoltaic electric systems\, batteries\, battery recycling\, and microgrids that can operate independently of the utility grid. In this program we will illustrate how microgrids provide resilience against natural disasters and grid outages. Microgrids can also reduce carbon emissions while having a positive economic impact on an individual property or community.\nThe potential for natural disasters to threaten large areas of California is significant. This webinar will provide examples of resilient microgrid\, including an approximately one MW microgrid designed for riding through Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events\, a microgrid for a community disaster recovery center\, and microgrid systems with smart controls that provide resilience and eliminate the need for electrical service upgrades for electrification of existing single-family homes.\nQualifies for 1.5hrs of ZNCD MCE \n\n Additional Resources\n Additional Resources \nLearning Objectives + Redwood Energy_Microgrids
